Phacoemulsification handpieces used in cataract surgery cost several thousands of dollars. Leason Ellis obtained two patents for its client, Surgical Design, on handpieces that cost about $100, and thus can be disposed of after each surgery, avoiding the time and expense of sterilizing the old handpieces.
