Dr. Sammy Duncan is an external professional resource providing subject matter consultant services to Leason Ellis in relation to his general chemistry and organic chemistry expertise. Dr. Duncan is an organic chemist and registered patent attorney, possessing significant subject matter knowledge and experience related to the full spectrum of the chemical arts including R&D based small molecules, specific crystalline forms, consumer products, polymers, chemical processes, and formulations. Dr. Duncan has used his experience to assist clients in the pursuit of intellectual property protection for over 20 years. Specifically, Dr. Duncan has drafted and prosecuted US, PCT and foreign patent applications; drafted and negotiated agreements covering intellectual property; assisted in patent litigations; prepared legal opinions; conducted and analyzed patent and literature searches; managed patent portfolios; performed due diligence in support of business development; and provided guidance concerning regulatory exclusivity before the FDA.

Dr. Duncan performed research in the laboratory of Prof. John W. Huffman in the preparation of pharmacologically active molecules to better understand receptor binding in the brain. Additionally, Dr. Duncan performed research in the laboratory of Prof. George F. Majetich to develop synthetic methods for Friedel-Crafts cyclialkylations to create multi-ring systems and then showcased these Friedel-Crafts reactions in the total synthesis of several natural products. Dr. Duncan has extensive experience in structure elucidation (1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR, GC-MS, MS, single-crystal X-Ray diffraction, and X-Ray powder diffraction).
