Dr. Brian M. Gummow is a partner at Leason Ellis and a member of the Patent Practice Group. He counsels clients in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical device, food processing, and consumer products industries on a wide range of intellectual property matters. Clients rely on Brian for strategic guidance in obtaining and managing robust, enforceable patent protection.
He has extensive experience in contested matters before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and partners with intellectual property litigators to represent clients in patent infringement actions in U.S. district courts and before the International Trade Commission. Brian also works with venture capital investors to structure venture financings, support start-up formation, and develop royalty stream investments. By carefully evaluating a company’s intellectual property portfolio—including potentially blocking third-party rights—he identifies strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities, and develops plans to mitigate risk and maximize value.
Brian holds a Ph.D. in Molecular and Integrative Physiology from the University of Michigan, where his research focused on regulating gene expression during adrenocortical development. He later conducted post-doctoral research in Cambridge, England, studying molecular signaling in skeletal muscle repair. He has authored several peer-reviewed publications and presented his research in multiple international forums. An avid sports fan, Brian supports the Michigan Wolverines and the teams from his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio.
